HPV Regional Laboratory determined that 211 women were at risk of cancer in one month

HPV Regional Laboratory determined that 211 women were at risk of cancer in one month

The HPV Regional Laboratory within the Ortahisar Health Directorate, one of the 12 laboratories in Türkiye, serves Rize, Giresun and Gümüşhane, as well as Trabzon.

Ortahisar Health Director Erdem Malkoç said that the HPV Regional Laboratory provides services under the Public Health Presidency.

Stating that new HPV Regional Laboratories were opened in 12 provinces in Türkiye, Malkoç said that the samples previously sent to Ankara were now being studied in Trabzon.

Malkoç, pointing out that the laboratory provides service to 4 provinces, said, "HPV is one of the leading causes of cancer, which we call cervical cancer in women, therefore, it is an early diagnosis tool that makes very serious contributions to the treatment process of the disease and the quality of life afterwards by being diagnosed early."

Explaining that it was important to study the samples in Trabzon in terms of saving time, Malkoç said, "Our Ministry of Health has carried out very serious studies on this issue and continues to do so. As a result of these studies, we have opened our laboratory in our region."

Stating that studies on cervix, breast, colon and colon cancers continue in healthy life centers, district health directorates and community health centers throughout Trabzon, Malkoç also noted that studies on early diagnosis of cancer and chronic diseases are being carried out in family medicine units.

"OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IN CANCER IS THAT IT CANNOT BE DIAGNOSED EARLY"

Malkoç drew attention to the importance of early diagnosis in cancer and made the following assessment: "Our biggest problem in cancer is not being diagnosed early. We have achieved serious success in the most common colon, cervical and breast cancers with early diagnosis methods. Last year, before the regional laboratory was opened in Trabzon, HPV samples were taken from approximately 9,200 women. Approximately 200 of these were positive and sent for further examination. Two were diagnosed with cancer and their treatments were provided, and the others are being followed up."

Malkoç, who stated that 6 thousand samples delivered to the laboratory from Rize, Giresun and Gümüşhane, as well as Trabzon, were examined in a month, continued as follows: "The results are currently being followed up. We have directed 211 of these samples that were positive to the advanced examination and diagnosis center. After the necessary examinations and treatments are planned there, they are followed up. If necessary, we follow up the continuation of the process again and provide the necessary information to our citizens."

A microbiologist, biologist, laboratory technician and medical secretary work at the HPV Regional Laboratory located in the Ortahisar Health Directorate building.
