Danger of air conditioning in hot weather! Don't get 'air conditioning pneumonia'! Experts warn of 'harmful gas'

With the increase in temperatures in the summer months, the use of air conditioners has become widespread. Experts warn that unconscious use of air conditioners, which are preferred for cooling purposes, can lead to many health problems, from respiratory diseases to muscle stiffness.
Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü stated that air conditioners cause the same air to circulate continuously and after a while the air quality deteriorates, and said, " Summer months have arrived. When summer comes, we cannot do without air conditioners. We definitely use air conditioners in closed spaces. Air conditioners cool but they carry some risks in terms of health. Of course, let's use them but it is useful to use them carefully. Air conditioners take the air in the room, cool it and give it back again. Since the same air inside is circulated, after a while that air gets dirty. You need to ventilate your room from time to time. We close the doors so that the cool air in the room does not get lost, but since the air gets dirty, it does not get oxygenated and causes some harmful gases to accumulate."
Prof. Dr. Özlü, who emphasized that it is essential to change and maintain air conditioner filters regularly, said, "You should direct the air conditioner fan so that it does not hit you directly. It is useful to direct the fan upwards. It is necessary to adjust the heat according to a certain room temperature and not to lower it too much. Generally, a room temperature between 21-24 degrees is accepted as the ideal temperature . When there is dryness in the room, it is necessary to humidify. If the air conditioner provides both coldness and humidification, it can cause irritation and diseases in the eyes, nose and mouth. It is essential to maintain air conditioners well and change their filters regularly. Bacteria, allergens, viruses and dust are transmitted to the surroundings in the form of wind, so they should be cleaned."
Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü, who stated that sudden temperature changes can cause various symptoms, said, "It is beneficial to reduce the temperature gradually. Sometimes you can understand the effects of air conditioning with complaints such as burning and discharge from the throat, nasal congestion, sneezing, dry eyes, and sometimes coughing and wheezing due to bronchitis, and chest tightness. When you suddenly enter cold air after hot weather, muscle cramps and stiffness can occur. Infections can also occur due to the air in the closed environment. There is also a special type of pneumonia that we call 'air conditioning pneumonia' in social areas with mass ventilation such as offices and shopping malls."
