3 benefits of eating avocado, according to a gastroenterologist

He pointed out that avocado has a protective effect against many chronic diseases thanks to its healthy fats, proteins and especially high fiber content.

LONG LIFE WITH FIBER CONTENT

One of the most striking features of avocados is their high dietary fiber content. Dr. Salhab says, “A medium-sized avocado contains about 10 grams of fiber, while larger ones can contain up to 14 grams.

“A significant portion of the daily recommended 25–30 grams of fiber can be met with just this fruit,” he said. Studies show that high fiber consumption is linked to longer lifespan and a lower risk of chronic disease.

GUT HEALTH

According to Dr. Salhab, avocado consumption increases the diversity of the gut microbiome. This contributes to the healthy functioning of the digestive system. “People who consume more avocados have a higher diversity of beneficial bacteria in the gut,” said Salhab, emphasizing that a healthy microbiome is critical for overall body health, including the immune system.

REDUCES CANCER RISK

The protective effects of avocado include reducing the risk of cancer. A study published in 2023 found that regular avocado consumption, especially in men, can reduce the risk of colon cancer. Dr. Salhab stated that this effect can be explained by the combination of fiber, healthy fats and antioxidants contained in avocado.
