The ZUS President reported that three quarters of the submitted applications are expected to be approved. In about 20%, there is no data on the second benefit, which is a condition for granting a widow's pension. This includes, for example, one's own retirement pension and family pension, i.e. a benefit after a deceased spouse. About 10% do not meet the criteria and these are applications to be rejected.

He said that since January, 694,359 applications for widows' pension have been received.

Derdziuk noted that ZUS will begin issuing decisions on widows' pensions in mid-June. He clarified that the algorithm will begin automatically generating decisions on June 13. In the case of applications submitted between January 1 and June 30, these decisions must be issued by July 31. In most cases, they will be delivered by mail.

The ZUS President noted that ZUS branches have recorded a ten-fold, or even a dozen-fold, increase in applications for the second benefit, which is necessary to receive a widow's pension. In total, 212,000 applications for the second benefit have been submitted since January. The ZUS President reported that some branches have already issued 99% of decisions on these applications.

ZUS estimates that a total of about 850,000 applications for widow's pension will be submitted. Derdziuk said that in 2025 widow's pension will cost PLN 3.2 billion (benefit paid for half a year, from July to the end of 2025), and in the following year - PLN 8 billion annually.

Widow's pension. Changes from January 1, 2027

In the case of applications submitted from January to the end of July this year, the widow’s pension will be awarded from 1 July.

Being a widow or widower is not enough to be entitled to a widow's pension. You must have reached the general retirement age, which is 60 for women and 65 for men, remain in a marital community until the day of your spouse's death, and acquire the right to a survivor's pension after the deceased spouse no earlier than before reaching the age of 55 (women) and 60 (men).

Widows and widowers can choose whether they want to receive the entire survivor's pension and 15% of their own benefit, or vice versa. From 1 January 2027, the second benefit will be increased to 25%. This choice is also available to people who are entitled to a pre-retirement allowance or benefit, a bridging pension, a teacher's compensatory benefit or a training pension.

The sum of the benefits established in the combination (so-called widow's pension) cannot exceed three times the amount of the lowest pension (PLN 1,878.91 gross), i.e. a total of PLN 5,636.73 gross.
