Second West Nile victim in Campania

A second West Nile virus death has been reported in Campania. A 74-year-old man died last Friday at the Ospedale del Mare in Naples, according to Il Mattino and Il Messaggero, but the news was only learned in the last few hours. The man, born in Pomigliano d'Arco, had been urgently transferred to the hospital on July 20th for a digestive hemorrhage. Two days later, he developed fever and confusion, a clinical condition aggravated by kidney failure. The patient died at 4:20 a.m. last Friday. An 80-year-old man from Maddaloni had died yesterday: he was hospitalized in Caserta.

The 80-year-old man who died yesterday in Caserta also had serious underlying conditions. Another elderly man, also from Maddaloni, is also being treated at the same hospital for West Nile virus. In Lazio, a 77-year-old man hospitalized at the Spallanzani Institute in Rome died. He had chronic conditions and had undergone a heart transplant. He had recently been staying in Baia Domizia, in the province of Caserta, where other cases of the infection have been confirmed in recent days.
