West Nile virus testing in Friuli Venezia Giulia before donating blood

With the spread of West Nile virus and the detection of a case in San Michele al Tagliamento, Veneto, all blood donors in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region are being subjected to an additional test specifically to detect the virus, to ensure their safety. Therefore, there is no suspension of donations, as is the case in other regions.
Thirty-one Italian provinces, including Udine, Rome, Naples, Turin, and Venice, have been subjected to virus prevention measures, according to the National Blood Center (CNS). Nationally, donors who stayed even one night in one of the affected areas during the 2025 season must undergo a NAT test to rule out infection, or alternatively, must observe a 28-day suspension from donating. The measure also applies to travelers from the United States, Canada, and Greece, where the risk is considered constant.
A different strategy has been implemented in Friuli Venezia Giulia, where there will be no suspension, but everyone will be tested. "There won't be any major repercussions in Friuli Venezia Giulia," explains Manuela Nardon, president of AFDS Udine. "All donors will be subjected to the specific test, so donations can continue with complete peace of mind." This measure is a precautionary and temporary measure to protect recipients and ensure maximum safety in the blood supply chain.
