Presidential candidate dies in Colombia after gun attack at rally

Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who was shown as one of the right-wing party's presidential candidates in the 2026 general elections in Colombia and was seriously injured in an armed attack on June 7, has reportedly died.

The death of 39-year-old Uribe Turbay was confirmed by his wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona.

Turbay passed away after spending more than two months in intensive care.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Uribe, who was meeting with citizens in the Modelia neighborhood west of Colombia's capital, Bogota, was attacked by gunfire while giving a speech on June 7. Brought to a private clinic by party members, Uribe was reportedly seriously injured, with six bullets hitting his body.

The government announced the activation of the Emergency Response Plan following the attack on Uribe.

The person thought to be the instigator of the assassination attempt targeting Turbay was caught by the police.
