Ministry of Health announced: The rate of 'overweight' in men and 'obesity' in women is high

At the end of the sixth week of the "Learn Your Ideal Weight, Live Healthy" campaign launched by the Ministry of Health throughout the country, the height and weight measurements of 4 million 923 thousand 302 people, 47.1 percent of whom were male and 52.9 percent female, were carried out throughout Turkey. As a result of the measurements, the body mass index of 2 million 985 thousand 25 people was found to be above the "normal" weight range.
Of the people whose measurements were taken, it was determined that approximately 6 percent were 'underweight', 33 percent were 'normal', 35 percent were overweight and 26 percent were in the 'obese' range; the rate of 'overweight' was high in men and ' obesity ' was high in women.
In the sixth week of the campaign, covering June 14-20, the participation record was renewed. A total of 1,252,861 people, 590,732 of whom were male and 662,129 of whom were female, had their height and weight measured.
As a result of the measurements, the body mass index (BMI) of the people participating in the campaign was determined. In the analysis made based on this data, it was seen that 6.1 percent of the 1 million 252 thousand 861 people participating in the campaign were underweight (BMI < 18.5), 33 percent were normal (18.5 BMI < 25.0), 35.2 percent were overweight (25.0 BMI < 30.0) and 25.7 percent were obese (30.0 BMI).
In the sixth week of the campaign, a total of 762,451 people, 403,500 of whom were women and 358,951 were men, whose body mass index was calculated to be above the 'normal' weight range, were directed to primary health care institutions to receive free nutrition and physical activity consultancy services, in line with the information provided and their own preferences.
'OVERWEIGHT' RATE IN MEN AND 'OBESITY' RATE IN WOMEN ARE PROMINENTData obtained in the last six weeks of the campaign revealed that the overweight rate in men is 40.3 percent, higher than the overweight rate in women, which is 30.7 percent; while the obesity rate in women, which is 30.7 percent, exceeds the obesity rate in men, which is 21.9 percent.
Overweight stands out as a health problem that affects the whole society and is increasingly prevalent in the world and in Türkiye.
In order to effectively combat this problem, it is of great importance to raise awareness in society, promote healthy eating behavior and increase physical activity.
