Head of the Cancer Institute of the Turkish Health Institutes, Prof. Dr. Burak Civelek, made a statement. Unlike classical chemotherapy drugs, smart drugs developed with high technology target cancer cells, minimize side effects and offer a more permanent treatment opportunity.
These drugs, which are effective in many types of cancer such as lung, skin and kidney tumors, will now be produced in Türkiye with domestic resources. Research and development processes are carried out meticulously in special laboratories.
Developing a smart drug from scratch can take 10-12 years. However, the production of a drug that is currently imported from abroad and approved for use can be completed in Türkiye in a shorter period of time, such as 3-4 years. Prof. Dr. Civelek summarized the details of the process in his statement to CNN TÜRK as follows: “First, you need to show its effectiveness in cell lines, then in animal models, and finally in limited and large human groups. Strong production facilities are needed for the product to be produced in high quantities. In addition, this production must be done without compromising quality.”
Prof. Dr. Civelek emphasized that Turkey has the scientific and technical infrastructure required for smart drug production: “Smart drugs are used quite effectively, especially in some lung, skin and kidney tumors. In Turkey, we have scientists and universities who can develop these drugs, and the authority to carry out this process.”
Local smart drug projects aim not only to create independence in the field of health but also to create economic added value. Prof. Dr. Civelek said, “Some of our private sector companies are about to produce the first local drugs. Our goal is not only to produce these drugs in our country, but also to become a country that achieves commercial success abroad.”
