Ministry's statement on gender reassignment

Ministry's statement on gender reassignment

In a written statement, the Ministry of Health stated, "According to Article 40 of the Turkish Civil Code, individuals requesting gender reassignment must obtain an official medical report before applying to court. Courts also request this report. With the new regulation, reports that could previously be prepared by three physicians will now be prepared by a full-fledged board of seven specialist physicians."

"EACH DOCTOR WILL EXAMINATE SEPARATELY"

The board consists of specialists in General Surgery, Psychiatry, Endocrinology, Urology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Plastic Surgery, and Medical Genetics. Each specialist is required to undergo a separate examination before the board meeting. The following statement is automatically added to reports prepared by three physicians: "Reports for gender reassignment must be prepared by a fully-fledged board. This report cannot be used for gender reassignment purposes."

"IT DOES NOT BRING ANY NEW CONVENIENCE OR OPPORTUNITY"

In conclusion, this regulation does not introduce any new convenience or opportunity. The aim is to prevent practices that violate legislation and to ensure standardization and oversight. Healthcare providers have been informed, and incomplete reports have been prevented.
