He went to the doctor with suspicion of a herniated disc and was diagnosed with scoliosis.

Scoliosis is defined as the sideways curvature of the spine. This curvature can sometimes be controlled only with exercise and sometimes with major surgeries. Scoliosis, which has various consequences ranging from decreasing the quality of life to different health problems, is a common condition in society. Scoliosis, which is seen in 3 out of every hundred children, is especially common in girls. Various events are organized every year in order to increase public awareness of scoliosis, which has increased treatment success with early diagnosis. In the "Scoliosis Warriors Back to Back, Fearlessly" event, Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Alanay shared the most recent developments in scoliosis treatment. Scoliosis warriors shared their own processes and experiences. The event ended with songs sung by artist Melis Fis for scoliosis warriors.

"I THOUGHT I HAD A HERNIATED DISC"

In the interview, Melis Fis, 23, who talked about her scoliosis experience, said that she travels a lot due to her busy concerts and that she went to the doctor earlier this year due to back pain, and that she was diagnosed with scoliosis while expecting a herniated disc diagnosis. The young singer said, "I actually learned that I have scoliosis very recently. I am currently 23, going on 24, and this is a condition that I have just encountered. But thanks to my teacher Ahmet, I learned that this is not something to be afraid of and how important early diagnosis is, because I could have had it diagnosed earlier. But right now, I have learned to live with my scoliosis and I give my concerts with it. I go on tour, travel, and I actually continue my life in peace with it."

When he was diagnosed with scoliosis, his doctor said, "Let scoliosis be your evil eye" and with an interesting coincidence, he composed his composition called Nazar at that time, and he said, "As my teacher said, he said to me, 'Let it be your evil eye' and he supported me a lot."

THE INSPIRING STRUGGLE OF 15-YEAR-OLD ADA DURU

One of the participants of the event was 15-year-old Ada Duru Alp. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at the age of 1 and diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 12 during the Covid pandemic, the young girl gave hope with her difficult but inspiring struggle.

Duru, who said, "I am very good with words" and stated that she always tries to look at events from a positive perspective and turn problems into opportunities, said that she also wrote a book called 'Hearts that Push the Limits' in order to raise social awareness about Scoliosis.

"It was an emotional process for me. It was a very special book for me because I wrote it by reflecting myself in my truest form," said the young girl, who described her experiences during the illness as follows: "It was a little difficult, but the result was very good. For example, my balance is more balanced now, I can keep myself more balanced. That's why it ended very well. My biggest goal regarding the treatment process is to be able to liberate myself a little more when I go out, that is, to be able to move independently in safe environments, in environments where I won't fall, by leaving the walker aside, or to be able to meet my own needs."

REBORN AFTER SURGERY

Gül Erden, 58, who has had to constantly 'fly' domestically and internationally for years despite her scoliosis due to her busy work schedule, also sincerely shared her cautionary story with the participants. Gül Erden said that her scoliosis was noticed when she was 20 years old during fittings for dresses her mother made for her. Gül Erden, who stated that she did not consider surgery because her scoliosis was not noticeable from the outside until she was in her 50s, said that she decided to have surgery when the curvature progressed and reached 75 degrees, she started experiencing very severe pain and she could not sleep at night. Erden said, "There is a limit to it and a person really can no longer maintain their quality of life. I did not encounter the results of the surgery as much as I feared, on the contrary, my pains disappeared, I started sleeping, my body swelling and edema decreased and of course my posture improved a lot. I had lost 9 cm of my height, 5 cm came back. I was able to return to my normal life very easily. I had a 3-month recovery, I started working out at home 1 month later. You need to be careful about certain movements depending on the level of your scoliosis. But it was a process that I wish I had done earlier."

"THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON IS EARLY DIAGNOSIS"

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Alanay also emphasized that the most powerful weapon in the fight against scoliosis is 'early diagnosis' and that regular check-ups are essential for children.

Alanay said, "The most common type of scoliosis we see is the type of scoliosis called idiopathic scoliosis or scoliosis of unknown cause, which occurs especially in adolescence, between the ages of 8 and 14, which includes 70-75 percent of almost all scoliosis. The frequency of occurrence of this in adolescence at this age I mentioned is 3 percent. Actually, 3 percent is a very large figure, meaning it is a significant public health problem. But we are lucky that not all of these are progressive, do not disrupt the quality of life, and almost 20 percent require treatment. If diagnosed early, simpler methods can be used, but if it is too late, surgical treatment may be required. This is most commonly seen in girls, but boys should also be considered. It is beneficial for children between the ages of 12-16 to be examined at frequent intervals by their parents, passing behind them. As an examination diagnosis, there is a lot of asymmetry, especially in the shoulders, or an asymmetry in the waistline, but the most diagnostic one is asymmetry between the two halves of the body when the child leans forward. In other words, the ribs become more prominent, especially on one side. Because "Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity. When these diagnoses occur, families should definitely consult a doctor," he said.
