Blood pressure of 12 over 8 is now considered pre-hypertension

Blood pressure of 12 over 8 is now considered pre-hypertension

A new Brazilian blood pressure management guideline no longer considers a 12/8 reading as normal blood pressure, but rather as an indicator of pre-hypertension. The document was developed by the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, the Brazilian Society of Nephrology, and the Brazilian Society of Hypertension.

According to the Brazilian Guideline for Arterial Hypertension 2025, the reclassification aims to identify individuals at risk early and encourage more proactive, non-pharmacological interventions to prevent the progression of patients' hypertension .

From now on, therefore, for the measurement to be considered normal pressure, it must be less than 12 by 8. Values equal to or greater than 14 by 9 continue to be considered hypertension in stages 1, 2 and 3, depending on the measurement made by the health professional in the office.

On social media, the Brazilian Society of Cardiology praised the document as crucial for guiding the clinical practice of cardiologists nationwide. "An essential update for those seeking to practice evidence-based medicine aligned with the latest recommendations," the organization posted.
