The Social Insurance Institution offers financial support in the form of a care allowance for people caring for a sick family member.

This benefit is available to employees covered by sickness insurance who must personally care for a child or other sick family member. "Other family members" include spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children over the age of 14 if they live in the same household as the insured person.

In the case of caring for another family member, such as a parent, care allowance is paid for a maximum of 14 days in a calendar year, and the total period of its payment cannot exceed 60 days.

Unused care days do not carry over to the next calendar year.

The benefit is not available if there are other family members in the same household who could provide care for the sick person. The exceptions are situations where the person is completely incapacitated for work, ill, physically or mentally incapacitated due to age, runs a farm, works night shifts, runs a business, is not legally obligated to provide care, or refuses to provide care.

The monthly care allowance amounts to 80% of the benefit calculation basis. The calculation basis is the average monthly salary paid for the 12 calendar months preceding the month in which the incapacity for work occurred.

To receive the benefit, you must provide your employer with a medical certificate of temporary incapacity to work due to the need to provide personal care and an application for care allowance Z-15B, available on the ZUS Electronic Services Platform.

The benefit is also payable if you need to personally care for a child up to 8 years of age in certain cases, a sick child up to 14 years of age or a sick disabled child.
