More and more cases of tick-borne diseases

"DGP" reported that the epidemiological reports of the National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene show that in the first half of 2025, 11,719 cases of Lyme disease and 203 cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) were recorded.

- This is almost 28 percent more than in the same period of 2024 - the newspaper reported.

The daily added that primary care physicians are also seeing an increasing number of patients with tick-borne diseases .

- We have been observing an increase for two or three years. Some infectious disease experts suspect that COVID-19 may be to blame, as it weakened our immune system during the pandemic to the point that we are more susceptible to various diseases, including those transmitted by ticks - Joanna Zabielska-Cieciuch, a family doctor and expert from the Zielona Góra Agreement, who runs a primary care clinic in Białystok, told DGP.

Repellents to protect against ticks

The Chief Sanitary Inspector warns: there are many products on the market designed to repel insects. These agents are available in various forms. These include repellents for application directly to clothing or skin (in the form of a spray, liquid, milk, cream, gel or wipes) and electric fumigators (devices designed for rooms that are placed in an electrical socket).

Repellents are biocidal products that, although they protect against ticks and mosquitoes, can also harm health and the environment. Therefore, it is worth checking whether a given product has an official permit for sale in the EU. Only tested and approved repellents guarantee effectiveness and safety of use.

- Information about the permit can be found on the product label, but also in the official list in the Public Information Bulletin of the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products, Medical Devices and Biocidal Products. Repellents that do not have a permit may not demonstrate the suggested effect, and may also pose a threat to life and health. Instructions for use, precautions, time of effective action and expiry date should be included on the product packaging - informs GIS on its website.

When repelling ticks, mosquitoes or other biting insects, always remember your own safety.
