Mataró Hospital has a specialized unit to treat uncontrolled hypertension.

The Mataró University Hospital (Maresme) has a Hypertension Unit, staffed by Internal Medicine and Nursing specialists, where patients who take more than three medications and whose condition is not under control are referred. Other patients with hypertension are treated by their primary care teams.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a condition that occurs when blood constantly presses too hard against the walls of the arteries. This forces the heart to work harder than necessary and, over time, can lead to serious problems in the heart, brain, or kidneys.

In Spain, 33% of adults between 30 and 90 years of age have high blood pressure, and one in three people is undiagnosed. Furthermore, approximately 46,000 cardiovascular deaths per year are attributable to hypertension, and it is the leading risk factor for health impairment (loss of disability-adjusted life years) in people over 49 years of age.

Uncontrolled hypertension. Hypertension is known as the "silent killer" because in most cases it causes no symptoms, but it can have serious complications such as stroke or heart attack. That's why it's important to keep it under control.

In this regard, more than 800 patients in Maresme each year undergo Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM), which measures the patient's blood pressure for 24 hours outside the hospital and helps provide a more accurate diagnosis.

Prevention and treatment. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other serious complications. Proper prevention and treatment of high blood pressure can reduce the risk of developing these complications and improve overall health.

The disease often presents no symptoms, especially in its early stages. However, some people may experience headaches, vision problems, chest pain, and other symptoms. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis and to avoid risk factors that can increase blood pressure.
