Gemmato, in Caserta brucellosis from 9.6 to 2.7% in one year

In the province of Caserta it has reduced the prevalence of brucellosis infection from 9.6% to 2.7% in less than a year. The announcement was made by the undersecretary to Health Marcello Gemmato who judges this result as "a success resulting from the joint work of the Government, the Commissioner extraordinary and local veterinary services". "And even more importantly, the incidence (i.e. the detection of new outbreaks during the year) has gone from 4.4% to less than 1%, an exceptional result that testifies the effectiveness of the Meloni Government's action, which I strongly support supported, in the eradication of this disease which, in addition to the animals, it can also affect humans. With the appointment of the Commissioner national extraordinary for bovine, buffalo brucellosis, sheep and goats and for bovine and buffalo tuberculosis, Dr. Nicola D'Alterio, we have faced it decisively and structured a long-standing health and livestock problem, which had been penalising the agri-food sector of Southern Italy for too long and in particular of Campania. Also essential was the work of the parliamentarians of the region, who have made themselves spokesperson for the needs of a sector recognised by all as flagship of Made in Italy", he commented. "The action of the commissioner - says Patrizio La Pietra, Undersecretary of State for Agriculture, Sovereignty Food and Forests - which is operating with the support of the official veterinarians of the ASL of Caserta and of the task forces, has represented a turning point in the operational management of the territory. "In the final stages of an eradication program, such as the one in which I am called to operate - says the Commissioner D'Alterio - the primary objective is the identification and the elimination of residual sources of infection, in order to achieve a prevalence and incidence close to zero".
