Cyber attacks on the rise, 73% of healthcare companies hit

The Italian healthcare sector is is today in an increasingly risky position in terms of cyber security due to cyber threats but also voluntary or accidental physical tampering. According to the Clusit Report 2025, only in 2024 at a global level there have been 810 cyberattacks were recorded in the healthcare sector, with a 30% increase compared to the previous year. Also in Italy There have been some successful attacks, at least 13 of which have been in the public domain classified as serious or very serious. Healthcare data is a highly profitable asset in the dark web, easily monetizable. In addition, the infrastructure digital health facilities are often characterized by known but unresolved vulnerabilities, and poor training of healthcare personnel in the field of cybersecurity. According to the recent research "Cybersecurity in healthcare: Threats, challenges and strategic responses in a rapidly changing landscape Kaspersky's "evolution", conducted by Censuswide among executives C-Level of large Italian healthcare companies (over 1,000 employees), 73% of the facilities have suffered at least one cybersecurity incident in the last 12 months. Of of these, almost one in four (24%) has suffered serious attacks, with significant consequences on the operational and organizational level. In media, these companies have experienced two episodes of system outages per year. In fact, 63% have declared to have suffered an interruption of operations between two and three times, putting at risk the continuity of the services. In particular, 66% of organizations have suffered attempts to steal sensitive data or intellectual property, with a peak detected in the last 4-6 months in 45% of cases, sign of an acceleration of the attacks.
