Unprecedented flooding in Maurienne

Violent thunderstorms following the heatwave caused a torrent in the Maurienne valley to flood in 70 years on Monday, causing significant damage in Modane and the surrounding area, on the border with Italy, the Savoie prefecture announced. There were no casualties. Water and mud flooded streets in Modane and the village of Fourneaux, up to 50 cm high in some areas, interrupting rail traffic between France and Italy "in both directions until further notice."
