Residents of the Feurs nursing home aren't just watching the Tour de France on television; they're also cycling, thanks to a sporting challenge designed especially for them. A way to combine a passion for cycling with maintaining independence.

It's an initiative as original as it is beneficial. During the twenty-one days of the Tour de France, nursing home residents are invited to hop on an exercise bike to participate in a collective challenge. The goal? To pedal, each at their own pace, and rack up the miles in a friendly atmosphere.

The project was initiated by Pauline Michalet-Rivolier, an adapted physical activity teacher at the school. "My goal is for everyone to remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible, in everyday activities and travel. So, during the Tour de France, we launched this challenge to keep moving," she explains.

Thanks to a modern bicycle kindly loaned by the District Club Médical store in Feurs, the kilometers traveled are recorded as they go. Residents ride independently when they can, or accompanied if necessary.

"I help them get on and off, I encourage them, and I motivate them," says Pauline Michalet-Rivolier, always there to motivate the troops. The initiative appeals to more than just residents. Families, visitors, and even staff at the facility can also hop on the bike during their free time. "It's open to everyone. Some visitors come to cycle with their loved ones; it's a very special shared moment," emphasizes the teacher.

Cécile, a resident, joined in the fun: "Tell me a little bit about how it works," she says, all smiles, before hopping on the bike. "Do I put my feet here so I can pedal?" she asks Pauline, pointing to the toe clips for the challenge leader.

“A real success”

Catherine Huynh, director of the geriatrics unit, is also excited about the project: "It's a real success, it's an excellent initiative. Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining independence. And it creates a great atmosphere!"

The connection with the Tour de France is strong: every afternoon, the stages are broadcast in the dining room. "These are generations who have always followed the Tour. They are still passionate about cycling, the riders, the landscapes. It's also a great way to rediscover France," comments Pauline.

At the Feurs nursing home, the Tour de France inspires much more than a simple broadcast; it becomes a driving force for autonomy, social connection, and shared pleasure.
