The heatwave continues to make the French sweat. This Tuesday, July 1st, sixteen departments, spanning the Aube to Vienne departments, are on red alert for heatwaves.

Apart from Finistère, Côtes-d'Armor, Calvados, Seine-Maritime and Manche, the entire country is on orange alert, or even yellow for the less unfortunate (residents of Morbihan, Eure, Orne, Somme, Pas-de-Calais, Hautes-Alpes and Corse-du-Sud).

Côte-d'Or, while faring better than neighboring Yonne and Aube, is one of the areas where temperatures reach very high thresholds . And you probably felt it last night, with temperatures sometimes not falling below 20°C. Not surprising, given that it was often still 29°C or 28°C last night at 11 p.m. across a large part of the department.

Lows at 22°C in Bessey-en-Chaume!

So, around 6 o'clock this morning, at the coolest time of the day, it was 20.6°C in Saulieu, 21.4°C in Bure-les-Templiers, 21.8°C in Bessey-en-Chaume... In Dijon, at roughly the same time, the temperature stabilized at around 20°C, before quickly rising again.

Elsewhere, particularly in the valleys, the temperature was cooler: in Recey-sur-Ource, it was "only" 15.6°C early this morning. On the other side of the Châtillonnais, in Nicey, the minimum recorded was 16.6°C. In Arnay-le-Duc, in the south of the department, it was 16.9°C.

Records broken or approached

At the hottest time of Monday, the Dijon Longvic station recorded a low 36.8°C. Very close to the record for the month of June, set on June 27, 2019 (37.3°C). But sad heat records have indeed been broken, as the Météo Côte-d'Or website points out. This was the case in Seurre, with a 36.5°C (the previous one, dating back to June 18, 2022, was 36.3°C).

When will the heat decrease?

At the end of last week , we announced that this heat, well above seasonal norms, should end between Wednesday and Thursday, not without the outbreak of major thunderstorms. MétéoNews then predicted that the mercury would drop by 10°C on Thursday, returning to more normal temperatures of around 26°C.

Bad news: while the heatwave is expected to end on Wednesday, it appears increasingly likely that temperatures will remain fairly high for several days.

Up to 36°C still expected on Friday and Saturday

"On Thursday, the wind will shift to the north and lower temperatures without causing storms," predicts Météo Côte-d'Or. The mercury will drop, but will settle around 30°C to 34°C. Friday and Saturday will see very hot days, with temperatures up to 36°C expected locally, in the mountains, urban areas, and plains. Nights should also continue to be warm, with lows around 20°C.

"It is only on Sunday that a more marked drop is expected, with a risk of thunderstorms and temperatures expected to fall below 30°C."

Impressive cumulonimbus clouds and thunderstorm cells were spotted late last night. Some of our readers captured these phenomena on camera.
