Act quickly: here are the first symptoms of heatstroke

Act quickly: here are the first symptoms of heatstroke

As France experiences a significant heatwave, it is essential to know the warning signs of heatstroke, which can be fatal.

Most of France is on heatwave alert for several days. Every year during heatwaves, many people are hospitalized due to the heat. In the summer of 2024, more than 17,000 hospitalizations and more than 3,700 deaths were recorded, according to a report by Public Health France . Heatstroke was the main culprit.

Heatstroke—or hyperthermia—occurs particularly in cases of prolonged exposure to heat. In some cases, the body is no longer able to regulate its internal temperature through sweating: it then exceeds 37°C, and often even reaches 40°C. This is overheating. Anyone can be affected, although young children and the elderly are most at risk.

The first signs to watch for are those of dehydration: headaches, weakness and fatigue, muscle cramps. Urine is less abundant and darker. If nothing is done to combat dehydration, it can then worsen: this is called heatstroke. This can manifest itself by a high fever, red skin, intense thirst, vomiting, changes in consciousness and behavior, and loss of consciousness.

In babies and young children, it can be more difficult to detect heatstroke. Warning signs include crying, fatigue, dark circles under the eyes, impaired consciousness, or dry lips. If you experience these symptoms in adults or children, it is imperative to call 15 immediately . "Heatstroke is an emergency," the Red Cross reminds us. Heatstroke can quickly become fatal: it is associated with a high mortality rate of around 10%, according to the Red Cross.

In case of heatstroke, cool down quickly with cold water and/or fan the skin. Avoid taking painkillers or fever reducers as this can make things worse. Many medications can increase heat-related risks; it is advisable to seek professional advice during periods of extreme heat. Dehydration and heatstroke can be prevented by staying hydrated, spending as much time as possible in a cool place, and avoiding heat exposure as much as possible.
