The Rappel Conso website is alerting consumers about more than 40 batches of cheese sold by most supermarkets. Listeria causes several dozen deaths each year in France.
More than 40 batches of cheese have been recalled due to suspected Listeria contamination, which can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the Rappel Conso website reported Tuesday. The cheeses, including Camembert, goat's cheese, Gorgonzola, and Brie, are sold at most major retailers, such as Leclerc, Auchan, and Carrefour. The various recalls were made between Monday and Tuesday. Most of these products come from the same company, the Chaverand cheese factory, located in the Creuse department, the website reported.
People who have consumed these cheeses "and who have a fever, whether isolated or accompanied by headaches or body aches, are invited to consult their doctor and report this consumption," warns the Rappel Conso website.
Listeriosis, caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is the second leading cause of death from food poisoning, with several dozen deaths occurring in France each year. "The problem for consumers is that, as usual, these recalls come too late when the damage has been done," laments Foodwatch.
According to the consumer protection association, the cheese factory "should have taken the necessary hygiene measures and ensured that it did not sell products that exposed consumers to a health hazard," after it was subject to a similar recall in June. Foodwatch also questions "the role of our supervisory authorities. What did they do between June and August?" it asks in its press release.
