This is how much soft drinks will cost after the IEPS increase proposed by the Treasury

The 2026 Economic Package proposes a tax increase on soft drinks, cigarettes, video games with violent content, and gambling. The document, presented by the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) , Édgar Amador Zamor , to the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies , seeks to encourage healthier habits among Mexicans and counteract the budgetary effects associated with health treatments for diseases related to the consumption of these products.
The increases to products and services listed in the previous paragraph would be as follows:
- 8% special tax on violent video game digital services
- Increase in the tax on online gambling from 30 to 50 percent
- Special Tax on Production and Services ( IEPS ) will rise to 3.08 pesos per liter
- Raise the ad valorem tax from 160 to 200% on tobacco cigarettes as well as on products containing nicotine
Currently, soft drink consumers pay 1.6451 pesos per liter in IEPS (Excise Tax) for each drink they consume. However, the Ministry of Public Health (SHCP) is proposing an 87.3 percent increase, bringing the final figure to 3.0818 pesos per liter.
With this, a 1-liter soft drink costing between 17 and 23 pesos would see a price increase of a couple of units, closing at between 19 and 25 pesos. Costs will vary depending on the product and its initial price.
The various tax increase proposals are part of the " healthy taxes " chapter of the 2026 General Economic Policy Criteria and, if approved by Congress, would begin to be implemented next year.
