Mexico has nine cases of dogs infected with screwworms.

As of May 14, there were a total of nine cases of domestic dogs infected with the cattle screwworm ( GBG ) in Mexico, according to a report by the Global Animal Health Information System (Wahis).

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WAHIS) website, 10 susceptible cases have been reported since February 11, including four recent cases of susceptibility, meaning they are dogs that may have been exposed to the disease.

The website indicates that, in addition to dogs, there is currently one case in hawks, 278 in cattle, 38 in equines (horses or donkeys), two in goats, three in sheep, and 85 in swine . Of the total number of animals, none have been euthanized due to GBG , according to the report. Of these, only one animal has died, and it was a bovine.

The Wahis statistical system indicates that all animals tested positive for symptoms and parasitological examinations performed by the National Reference Center for Animal Parasitology and Analytical Technology.

It emphasizes that, in all cases, without exception, the control measures indicated by the OMSA were applied, which include disinfestation, movement restrictions, treatment, traceability (i.e., monitoring and recording all stages of animal production, processing, and distribution), surveillance within the restricted zone, and surveillance outside the restricted zone.

How to care for pets
  • Examine your pet daily, especially if they live in rural or humid areas. Pay attention to any wounds, bites, or irritated areas, and keep them clean and dry.
  • Wash wounds with hydrogen peroxide or antiseptic solutions, and cover them if necessary. Do not use home remedies without veterinary supervision.
  • There are topical and oral products that help repel flies and larvae. Consult your veterinarian about the safest and most effective options for your pet.
  • Keep your pet's living space clean. Avoid accumulations of garbage, food scraps, or organic matter that can attract flies.
