The National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance ( Invima ) reported that it has strengthened its inspection and control actions on toothpastes containing stannous fluoride , after the Brazilian Health Agency issued an alert in March due to alleged adverse effects associated with products containing this ingredient.
"Since the alert was announced, we activated the established protocols, issued a bulletin in May, and conducted inspections on all products that have mandatory health notifications," Invima stated.
The agency confirmed that the specific product for which Brazil issued the warning is not sold in Colombia, information corroborated by the manufacturer.
After reviewing 30 reports of adverse effects received in Colombia, Invima identified that the cases are not related to stannous fluoride, but rather to the levels of a flavoring present in some formulations.
In a meeting with the owner of the Colgate brand in Colombia, it was confirmed that there are currently two health notifications in force that include this flavoring: COLGATE TOTAL CLEAN MINT TOOTHPASTE (NSOC29824-24CO) and COLGATE TOTAL CLEAN MINT TOOTHPASTE (NSOC29819-24CO). Of these, only one is marketed in the country.
"After analyzing the situation, the trademark owner has decided to voluntarily discontinue marketing Colgate Total Clean Mint Toothpaste (NSOC29824-24CO) in Colombia as of July 25, 2025 ," Invima stated.
