Some people exercise almost compulsively. But this can't always be viewed as an illness—and often, there's another problem behind supposed exercise addiction.

For example, Achim, 48 years old, an administrative employee, married for 15 years, with one child. He increasingly experiences "strange states of tension," as he puts it: He is restless and tense, unable to concentrate on anything, "it's almost as if I'm in physical pain." Only when he goes jogging does the tension disappear: Then a feeling of happiness sets in, a great sense of relief; he is relaxed and can turn his attention to work, carrying on with his life as normal—until the next "state of tension," which sometimes arises as early as the evening of the same day or the next day.
