Today in Spain: A roundup of the latest news on Tuesday

Tourists flats in Extremadura vandalised, UK Embassy searches for new intern in Barcelona, more foreign pupils at Spanish schools than ever and more news on Tuesday September 2nd.

Growing number of tourists flats in Extremadura vandalised

Extremadura tourist accommodation association Aptuex has denounced the “relentless” acts of vandalism in the city of Cáceres, even though the western region does not receive a high number of tourists and rents haven’t gone up as much as in other parts of Spain.

Digital door access systems for the tourist lets have been smashed, anti-gentrification posters have been put up on doors and the all-too-common “tourist go home” message has been graffitied on the walls of holiday lets.

“Cáceres has to be an open, safe and welcoming city - We hope authorities take action, ” the group said in a statement.

UK Embassy searches for new intern in Barcelona

The British Embassy in Spain has announced that it is now open for applications for an internship position at the UK Department for Business and Trade in Barcelona.

This six month placement in the Catalan capital will last six months, starting in January 2026, and will involve work in fields such as international trade, institutional relations and support for British companies.

The deadline for applications is September 15th, 2025. Find out more about the internship here.

More foreign pupils at Spanish schools than ever

When schools across Spain start to reopen on September 8th, classes will be more diverse than ever, with 1.12 million non-Spanish children.

This represents a 30 percent increase in five years, and one that’s particularly noticeable in primary school.

The birth rate in Spain is among the lowest in Europe at 1.12 per woman, and if it weren’t for foreign mothers, the rate would be even lower.

Spain has already lost nearly 200,000 children in five years, and this shortfall would be 40 percent if it weren’t for migration.

Two wildfires put out in Málaga

Two forest fires broke out in Málaga province on Monday, one in Benalmádena and the other in Málaga city in the Monte Coronado area.

It took firefighters just three hours to put out the wildfire in Benalmádena, whereas the one in Málaga took longer to extinguish and more manpower and means.

Although Spanish authorities have declared that the worst of the country's record wildfire season is now over, there are still blazes breaking out across the country and other lingering fires that haven't been completely put out.
