Stem cell therapy in neurological diseases is not standard, it is in the experimental stage.
Prof. Dr. Canpolat said that studies on stem cell therapy are ongoing both in Türkiye and around the world.
Canpolat pointed out that this treatment is still in the experimental phase for most neurological diseases, saying, "Stem cell therapy is not a standard treatment for most neurological diseases; it is an experimental treatment. First of all, it can be used within the scope of experimental treatment applications when standard treatment methods fail to provide a solution for patients."
Canpolat stated that stem cell therapy should not be perceived as a "cure-all," adding, "The media's influence, the scientific data published by researchers, and the industry's excessive interest in this field can sometimes lead to sensational news."
Canpolat emphasized that the results of this treatment will be better seen in the near future, stating that they, as physicians, are monitoring the process at this stage and that patients should also act in light of scientific data.
Canpolat emphasized that patients and their families should be cautious about treatment processes whose effectiveness has not been proven, stating: "Stem cells are not a panacea; their use within a scientific and ethical framework is crucial. At this point, we must trust our physicians, especially those conducting these studies academically. Caution should be exercised when overly relying on sensational news and resorting to processes whose effectiveness and mechanisms have not yet been clearly established. An article we recently read mentioned the concept of 'stem cell tourism.' It stated that patients can be guided towards these treatments in various ways, and it emphasized the need for caution. We recommend proven treatments with known mechanisms to our patients. Therefore, I want to emphasize that the process is currently ongoing."
