Rubbing your eyes can cause vision loss! 'There is a significant symptom'

Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Burcu Usta Uslu explained that keratoconus can develop in people who rub their eyes frequently and violently, saying, "This condition is a serious health problem characterized by deformities and thinning of the cornea, and can threaten vision and even the integrity of the eye as it progresses."
Keratoconus occurs when the cornea, the outermost layer of the eye, thins and becomes tapered, losing its natural round shape. Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Burcu Usta Uslu explained that a cornea that loses its smooth, spherical structure can reduce vision quality. "Keratoconus negatively impacts vision, and this can lead to vision loss in later stages," she said. "While the exact cause of the disease is unknown, minor trauma to the cornea, such as intensely scratching the eye, and genetic predisposition are significant risk factors."
