More than 720,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year. According to official records for 2024, 4,460 people died by suicide in Turkey, a total of 71,865 between 2003 and 2024.
Making a statement on September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day, CHP Bursa Deputy Prof. Dr. Kayıhan Pala stated that suicides had doubled during the AKP era and said, "An effective public health program should be carried out by taking into consideration root causes such as harassment, violence, and economic depression."
Pala emphasized that this deepening problem has a broad socioeconomic basis. He stated that the AKP government is driving young people to despair, and that the suicide rate observed in the 15-19 age group, which was 2.25 per 100,000 in 2011, has tripled to 6.85 by 2022. He submitted a parliamentary question to the Ministry of Health.
