Stopped taking Ozempic? Study reveals how quickly weight gain can return

GLP-1 analogues, such as Ozempic , Wegovy, and others in the same class, have revolutionized obesity treatment. In addition to controlling blood sugar and increasing satiety, these drugs promote weight loss and help prevent and manage chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular problems.

But a new study raises a warning — especially for those who use the medication without a real medical indication.

Researchers at Peking University in China analyzed 11 studies (through a meta-analysis) to investigate the average time to weight regain after stopping Ozempic. The study, which involved 2,466 participants, revealed that weight tends to return between 8 and 20 weeks after stopping use. The findings were published in the scientific journal "BMC Medicine."

This effect, according to experts, is not surprising. The human body has defense mechanisms against fat loss, as adipose tissue was essential for our ancestors' survival—protecting against food shortages and extreme climate change.

The greater the weight loss, the greater the tendency to regain it—the so-called yo-yo effect. Some research has shown that for every pound lost, the body increases its appetite by about 100 calories a day as compensation. In many cases, the weight regained exceeds the initial weight, which poses an additional health risk.

This cycle of repeatedly gaining and losing weight can damage internal structures, overload organs, and increase the risk of heart disease.

Therefore, the use of pens like Ozempic should be reserved for people with a clinical indication, always under specialized medical supervision. Many experts even advocate for continuous treatment, as the genes associated with obesity remain active even after weight loss.

What studies reinforce is that medication alone won't solve the problem. It should always be combined with a consistent weight-loss plan, including proper nutrition, regular physical activity—especially strength training, which helps maintain and accelerate metabolism—and constant monitoring.

Ultimately, it is your lifestyle that will determine whether you maintain your weight in the long term.
