- The Parliamentary Team for Medical Safety has been established in the Senate
- The team was established on June 11, and the inaugural conference was held the following day.
- The Team was headed by Senator Agnieszka Gorgoń-Komor, and its members included NRL President Łukasz Jankowski and NRL Vice President Klaudiusz Komor.
- - In the wake of recent tragedies, we started talks with members of parliament. We heard that cooperation between many ministries is needed, that tightening penalties is simple, but in order to really change the situation, dialogue is needed - emphasized Łukasz Jankowski
The Senate held a conference inaugurating the Parliamentary Team for Medical Safety (June 12). Senator Agnieszka Gorgoń-Komor was appointed the team's chairperson , and her deputies were: senators Monika Piątkowska and Władysław Komarnicki , as well as the president and vice-president of the Supreme Medical Council: Łukasz Jankowski and Klaudiusz Komór , secretary of the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives Kamilla Gólcz , and a representative of the National Chamber of Physiotherapists Elżbieta Skorupska .
Senator Agnieszka Gorgoń-Komor emphasized that the team has very important tasks to perform for people who are associated with medicine, in response to what is happening in doctor's offices, hospitals and public spaces.
- Recently, there have been almost daily acts of aggression against medics who save human lives. First, a paramedic was murdered, then a surgeon, our colleague, Tomek Solecki, then a female doctor was beaten, causing serious damage to her health. We cannot stand by and watch this. That is why we have created a space in the Senate for deeper discussions that will help create good law so that medics feel safe in their workplace and that violence does not occur - explained the senator.
The President of the Supreme Medical Council, Łukasz Jankowski, thanked the Senate for the initiative, emphasizing that the growing aggression against medical professionals in Poland affects not only the work of this community, but also the situation of patients.
- In the wake of recent tragedies, we began talks with members of parliament. We heard that cooperation between many ministries is needed, that tightening penalties is simple, but in order to really change the situation, dialogue is needed. And so far, there has been no space for such dialogue. And today, such a space is being created. We hope that the parliamentary team will unite members of parliament from all sides of the political scene in working for the good of not only medical professionals, but above all, patients - he added.
In turn, the vice-president of the Supreme Medical Council, Klaudiusz Komor, pointed out that "the basis of treatment is mutual trust between the patient and the doctor. If medics do not feel safe, they will not be able to do their job well, which will always be to the detriment of the patient". In his opinion, the current situation cannot be solved with one simple solution, but it is certainly necessary to introduce such changes in the law that will give medics a greater sense of security.
Secretary of the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives Kamilla Gólcz expressed hope that the Parliamentary Team for Medical Safety will be a good space for discussion about good law – “one that will ensure that people who take an active part in saving human life will not lose theirs”. - So far, we have heard beautiful declarations and we hope that it will not end with declarations. That nurses, paramedics, physiotherapists and doctors will be able to come to work with peace of mind and do it with satisfaction – she said.
Elżbieta Skorupska, representative of the National Chamber of Physiotherapists, thanked for including representatives of the physiotherapist community in the team. She said that 80% of physiotherapists are women, often working in home conditions with patients, among whom there are people with mental disorders. She emphasized that the issue of violence in the physiotherapist community has been raised for a long time.
The deputy chairwoman of the team, senator Monika Piątkowska, recalled that a tragedy occurred in Kraków a dozen or so weeks ago – a patient murdered his doctor. - It was a symbolic moment, because unfortunately it was neither the first nor the last tragedy. We know that after this tragic accident, there were further attacks on medics in our country. We decided to say: enough! - she said. She also added that senators have the legislative initiative, which is why a team was established in which "we will jointly develop specific proposals for statutory changes that will increase the safety of medics and patients. We will pilot these projects until the law is passed. I am very glad that members of parliament will do this work together with the community that has the greatest knowledge in this area".
Senator Władysław Komarnicki thanked for undertaking a "responsible legislative mission".
He stressed that the Minister of Justice, Adam Bodnar, who is also a senator, will also play a significant role in these works.
- It won't end with the initiative, because the problem is very serious and we are all terrified. I hope that it will be solved with good law and enforcement of its compliance - concluded the vice-chairman of the Medical Safety Team.
