The Medical University of Gdańsk has launched a nursing research laboratory

The Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG) has launched a nursing research lab. It will conduct research on the effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare models from the perspective of the patient, payer, and system, the university's press office announced.
The announcement stated that the lab will integrate data on health outcomes important to patients, their experiences, and cost analysis, as well as the digitization of care. "All this so that we can effectively support the development of a sustainable healthcare system in Poland," the release stated.
Experts invited to the project will model and implement value-based healthcare, meaning that it focuses on the real outcomes of treatment and the quality of life of patients, not just the number of procedures performed.
Researchers will also develop nursing care effectiveness indicators – a set of measures that will show the quality and effectiveness of nursing care – for example, how quickly a patient regains independence, how they evaluate care, and whether it helps them avoid complications.
Prof. Dorota Kilańska, head of the Department of Social Nursing and Health Promotion at the Medical University of Gdańsk and the initiator of the creation of the laboratory, was quoted in the press release as saying that the team's work will serve, among other things, the standardization and integration of data for scientific research purposes using semantic interoperability in analytical systems.
"This means that data on nursing care will be collected in a uniform manner and will be compatible with other medical systems in Poland and around the world, for example, thanks to classification that describes the patient's profile and shows what has been done for them, which allows for data analysis," she said.
According to Professor Aleksandra Gaworska-Krzemińska, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Head of the Institute of Nursing and Midwifery at the Medical University of Gdańsk, this project demonstrates the crucial role nursing plays in the healthcare system. It also proves "that Polish science can confidently co-create international standards for value-based health care."
"I would like to express my special thanks to the entire MUG team led by Prof. Dorota Kilańska and our international partners – it is thanks to their knowledge, experience, and passion that we have managed to create a space that will have a real impact on improving the quality of life of patients in Poland and abroad," she said.
By 2028, the team plans to conduct: digital nursing care maturity research in cooperation with the Medical University of Lodz, PROMs/PREMs and quality of life research in patients covered by an integrated care model, and evaluation of the implementation of a value-based care model for patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and CVD (Cardiovascular Diseases), as well as Care Transition in Advanced Practice Nursing – a VBHC pilot in primary care and hospitals.
VBHC is a healthcare model that focuses on patient value and treatment outcomes rather than the number of medical procedures performed.
The team, based on MUG experts, includes specialists from Dublin City University, the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems University College Dublin, and the Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto. The researchers intend to engage in the practical education of medical staff, particularly advanced practice nurses (APNs). (PAP)
