Sunscreen comes in all shapes and sizes these days: for babies, kids, adults, athletes, you name it. But do you really need a separate one for yourself? Not necessarily.

In fact, you might actually be better off with sunscreen for kids.

Children's sunscreen is often milder. No perfume, no alcohol, and no other irritating ingredients . That makes it ideal for sensitive skin types. Are you prone to itching, redness, or eczema? Then a children's version is just right for you. "Sunscreens that are specifically formulated for babies or children are very mild and generally do not contain known skin irritants," dermatologist Michele Green explains to Huffpost .

Another advantage is that children's sunscreen is usually cheaper than adult sunscreen. Sometimes you pay less for the exact same SPF formula just because it says "kids" on the bottle.

Not much. Children's sunscreen usually contains mineral filters, such as zinc oxide. These form a protective layer on your skin and work immediately. Adult versions often use chemical filters, which are a bit more pleasant to spread, but often cause irritation. In some cases, the ingredient lists are even exactly the same. Only the packaging differs.

The other way around doesn’t always work. Children, and especially babies, have thinner skin. Chemical filters from adult sunscreens can irritate more quickly. That’s why doctors always recommend a mild, mineral sunscreen for young children. “Because mineral sunscreen is not absorbed and remains on the skin, which reduces the risk of irritation.”

So, what should you choose? A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, one that has a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) and one that is water resistant if you are going to swim or sweat. Note: terms like 'baby', 'kids' or 'sports' are not legally protected. So check what is really in it.
