Dr. Adriana Juárez Albarrán, oncologist at the General Hospital Zone No. 1-A “Dr. Rodolfo de Mucha Macías,” said that Sarcomas are a diverse group of tumors that can also manifest with spontaneous fractures, unexplained gastrointestinal discomfort, and vomiting. .

"Any pain, discomfort while eating, or bowel movements that persist for more than three months and do not improve with specific medical treatment requires further investigation and testing to arrive at a diagnosis of sarcoma," he explained.

He indicated that the World Health Organization (WHO) has described more than 100 types of sarcoma, which primarily occur in muscle, fatty tissue, or bone; they are also associated with infections and immunocompromised patients; "each has a different approach and treatment."

He detailed that The main causes of tumor development are hereditary syndromes, occupational exposure to certain chemicals in the manufacture of plastics, herbicides, or radiation. , the latter including patients who receive it as part of a medical treatment.

He emphasized that this tumor is rare, occurring between five and six cases per 100,000 inhabitants; in children, it accounts for 15 to 20 percent of malignant tumors and only two percent in adults.

Dr. Juárez Albarrán indicated that approximately 3,500 consultations are provided annually in High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) to IMSS patients for health issues related to sarcomas .

He explained that regarding diagnosis, Social Security has Family Medicine Units throughout the country where members can go if they experience any symptoms and be referred to secondary and tertiary care hospitals, which have multidisciplinary teams to provide care, as well as surgical, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy equipment.

Additionally, he mentioned that Social Security has Rehabilitation Units to support people with disabilities as a result of sarcoma, so they can return to their normal lives.

"The earlier the diagnosis and treatment are made, the better the patient will fare. Surgical treatment is essential to achieve the best outcome , and this is possible in the early stages. When the tumor has spread, a complete surgical approach is more difficult, and even when it occurs in a limb, amputation may not be necessary," he emphasized.
