How healthy is it to eat steamed tacos for breakfast?

How healthy is it to eat steamed tacos for breakfast?

Basket tacos, also known as sweaty tacos or steamed tacos, originated in Mexico at the beginning of the 20th century.

It is thought—as with every emblematic street food—that its origin responded to the harsh needs of the working class: access to a meal that was not so expensive to prepare (or acquire), practical, tasty, and that could satisfy the appetite.

While there's no exact date that says "steamed tacos were born today," it's thought they originate in Mexico City and its outskirts. Cities where street food is the daily bread of their fast-paced lifestyle.

Their success, obviously, was immediate. In a short time, they became a staple dish for street vendors, markets, and industrial areas. They were homemade, quick to serve, and very affordable—ideal for eating well without devouring your entire salary in one sitting.

In the beginning was the verb—or rather , the classic potato stews with chorizo and refried beans. Then came all the others: rajas (strips of chili), chicken tinga (chicken tinga), pressed chicharrón (pork rinds), and a long etcetera.

The preparation of tacos de canasta begins by making a soft dough made from corn flour, water, and salt until it has a smooth, manageable texture. After letting it rest, uniform tortillas are formed, ensuring they are the right thickness for proper cooking. Then, the traditional fillings mentioned above are prepared.

Each tortilla is filled and carefully folded to form tacos, which are then fried until golden and crispy. After draining off the excess fat, the tacos are placed in a basket lined with a clean cloth, which helps keep them warm and tender until serving.

They are typically accompanied with sauce, lemon, and other toppings of your choice, offering a simple yet delicious culinary experience.

Is it healthy to eat them?

We won't argue: tacos de canasta are delicious. But—as always, there's a catch—consuming them daily can have adverse effects. Because they are fried foods, they tend to contain a high percentage of saturated fats and calories, which increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Additionally, some fillings, such as chorizo and pressed pork rinds, are high in sodium, which can lead to high blood pressure and other heart problems.

Last but not least: hygiene. If you buy them from a place where there is clearly little cleanliness and care, there is a risk of food contamination.
