For many people, their morning isn't complete without a cup of coffee. That caffeine hit is not just about waking up, as there are so many delicious ways to enjoy it.

But did you know that jazzing up your coffee with certain additions isn't only a treat for the taste buds – it could also be great for your wellbeing? In a recent TikTok video, health expert Dr Karan Rajan and nutritionist Corey Rodriguez have hailed the benefits of 'food synergy'—combining specific foods to amplify their health perks. So, as you whip up your next morning coffee, consider grabbing a household favourite – cocoa – to mix in.

Cocoa powder

Corey explained: "If you mix cocoa into your coffee, then the caffeine in the coffee and the theobromine in the cocoa work together to enhance mood, alertness and mental clarity."

Should I use cocoa or cacao?

It's essential to know the difference between cocoa powder and cacao. Raw cacao, available on Amazon, undergoes less processing than cocoa powder and preserves more nutritional goodness, offering a richer, more pronounced taste.

Conversely, cocoa powder, commonly stocked in local supermarkets, involves more heat treatment than cacao and may often come with added artificial flavours or sweeteners.

Cacao is often perceived as a 'healthier' choice due to its less processed nature, but both cacao and cocoa offer benefits when consumed in moderation.

Health benefits of cocoa in coffee

As Corey highlighted, incorporating cocoa into your morning brew can have significant benefits.

Numerous studies have discovered that polyphenols, such as those found in cocoa, may decrease the risk of neurodegenerative diseases by enhancing brain function and blood circulation.

These vital compounds have also been associated with improved blood sugar levels. However, it's worth noting that processing and heating cocoa can result in the loss of these beneficial properties.

Raw cacao, on the other hand, could be an even healthier option. Healthline experts regard raw cacao as a superfood, boasting some of the most potent antioxidant properties available.

Anti-inflammatory cacao not only lowers blood pressure, increases good cholesterol, and reduces bad cholesterol, but it also offers cognitive benefits.

With mood-enhancing and anti-depressive qualities, cacao is excellent for promoting brain health too.
