Lyon: Doctors and medical students on strike this Tuesday

On Tuesday, April 29, several doctors and medical students will gather in front of the Edouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon. They will protest against the proposed law aimed at reducing medical deserts.

Following the favorable vote on the bill concerning medical deserts, several rallies will be held across France this Tuesday, April 29. In Lyon, doctors and medical students will gather at 2 p.m. in front of the Edouard Herriot Hospital to protest this bill, which has been put forward by Guillaume Garot (Socialist Party) MP for the 1st constituency of Mayenne. Due to this strike, some medical practices may be closed this Tuesday, and waiting times for those that remain open may be extended.

Through this mobilization, graduates and future doctors are seeking to express their discontent with this new law. Some student associations are even proposing other solutions, such as increasing internships in underpopulated areas, expanding existing solidarity initiatives, such as the medicobus or the Solidarity Doctors Association, or developing measures to encourage junior doctors to set up in underpopulated areas, as part of the implementation of the fourth year of internship.

As a reminder, the proposed law on medical deserts aims to combat these by "directing the establishment of general practitioners and specialists to areas where the provision of care is insufficient." Concretely, the new law proposes to create an authorization for the establishment of doctors, issued by the ARS (Regional Health Agency). The authorization would then be issued directly in under-resourced areas, while it would be necessary to wait for a doctor to close his or her practice to set up in other areas.
