Extreme heat: the City of Nice presents its heatwave plan for seniors, here's what you need to know

"Heat waves in Nice lasted fifteen to twenty days fifteen years ago... and more than sixty in 2024. Global warming is no joke!" The figures are relentless, the mercury already high on this late spring morning.
Mayor Christian Estrosi was invited to a breakfast meeting on Friday, June 20, in front of a group of former residents of the Saint-Jean-d'Angély independent living facility.
Objective: To present the municipal heatwave plan, in conjunction with the Municipal Social Action Center (CCAS), to seniors, who are particularly vulnerable to heat. Here's what you need to know.
Fans for vulnerable Nice residents registered with the CCASPreventive information, voice alerts, courtesy calls every 48 hours, home visits if necessary... Managed by the CCAS, the register of vulnerable and isolated people allows for more detailed monitoring during heatwaves.
"In Nice, this confidential list has 2,521 registered users. Since last year, " the mayor said, " we have also been offering them fans on demand. More than 1,500 are available this year."
Registration by the senior, a third party or a healthcare professional: 04.93.135.135 or [email protected]
Senior homes open all summerThis is new. Usually largely closed during the summer, the five senior citizens' homes (Cimiez, Pasteur, Ray, Port, and Prom') will offer outdoor activities in July and August.
On the menu, among other things: qigong, quizzes, card and board games, with refreshments provided. In essence, "it's also a way to combat the isolation of the elderly, tempted to stay at home during periods of extreme heat," says Christian Estrosi.
Program available from Monday from the municipal office for seniors: 04.89.04.65.03.
Cool respite in the city's nursing homes and residencesAre you a neighbor of one of the three nursing homes or three independent living residences managed by the city and would like a little fresh air? Just ring the bell.
During heatwave alerts, the municipality allows non-residents to access the air-conditioned rooms of these structures, without reservation.
It is also possible to invite yourself (for 3 euros) to the table of one of the three solidarity restaurants for seniors in the town: L'Alegría (Magnan), La Pignata (Nice-Est) and La Maiouneta (le Ray).
Information from the CCAS: 04.97.135.135.
Night shelter open during the day for the vulnerable during heatwavesEven more exposed to the heat: people without fixed or stable accommodation.
In the event of a heatwave alert, in addition to the Le Phare day reception center, accessible from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., avenue du XVe-Corps, the City will open the air-conditioned room of its night reception center, at 33, rue Trachel, during the day.
