Employers are tackling sick leave in companies

Stop absenteeism in companies! In less than twenty-four hours, the two main employers' organizations have once again stepped up to draw attention to the growing cost of sick leave. On Wednesday, July 9, during a press conference, the Medef (French employers' association) presented several proposals aimed at containing spending—knowing that its ideas are part of a broader reflection on our healthcare system. In a press release issued the day before, the Confederation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (CPME) had also emphasized the urgent need to "limit the explosion" of the phenomenon. These initiatives come just days before the government's presentation of plans to achieve $40 billion in savings.
Statistics provide insight into the problem. In 2023, the general social security system allocated €10.21 billion for daily benefits awarded to employees on sick leave (due to an "ordinary" illness, i.e., one not attributable to professional activity). This sum tends to increase at an increasingly rapid rate: +6.4% per year, on average, between 2019 and 2023, compared to +2.9% during the 2010s.
