This is how rain can affect your mood, according to psychology

The rainy season has officially arrived in Mexico, and intense storms have hit several states in recent weeks.

In addition to rainfall, stormy days are characterized by partly cloudy or completely overcast skies and falling temperatures.

Although this climate is comfortable and favorable for some people, the reality is that the lack of sunshine negatively impacts others psychologically.

Several studies have investigated how weather conditions affect people's moods.

In this context, clinical psychologist Deborah Serani, who specializes in the relationship between climate and emotions, explains that the reduction in sunlight can impact how individuals feel. This is because sunlight plays a fundamental role in regulating serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with happiness.

On the other hand, psychologist Karla Sheila Madrigal Sánchez indicates that a reaction of sadness and lack of motivation to gray days is directly associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder ( SAD ), a form of depression that occurs at certain times of the year.

"We are solar beings. When we don't receive enough light, our mood is affected." , he explains.

Symptoms of this condition, first described by South African psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal in 1980, include apathy, excessive sleepiness, weight gain, irritability, and a marked loss of interest in everyday activities. It should be noted that the disorder primarily affects people predisposed to depression.

In addition, rain can alter heart rhythms, disrupting the biological clock.

Other experts point out that this natural phenomenon activates emotional response mechanisms linked to shelter and protection.

Despite this, the tendency to get sad on rainy days is not uniform, since, as a study published in Emotion in 2013 explains, the reactions are diverse and can be attributed to each individual's personality: While extroverts may feel frustrated by the inability to go outside due to rain, introverts see the phenomenon as an opportunity to enjoy solitude, so this weather triggers peace.

If you find that cloudy days are deeply affecting you and the discomfort is persistent, it's best to consult a specialist to rule out a more serious condition.
