Screwworm fence reinforced in Jalisco

Screwworm fence reinforced in Jalisco

The State Government's Rural Development Secretariat (Sader) announced that it will strengthen the fence to prevent the entry of screwworms in Jalisco by installing more inspection points and mobile patrol cars in different areas of the state.

It was also announced that canine teams, consisting of a dog and a veterinarian, will be used as a containment strategy to prevent the entry of the screwworm into the state .

The director of the Agency for Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (ASICA) , Armando César López Amador, explained that this is a fundamental tool that is already being used on the country's southern border.

"The use of trained dogs to detect myiasis, maggots, and larvae through smell is highly accurate, with a statistically recorded effectiveness of 95 percent . More than nine cases identified by the dogs turned out to be positive," he stated.

He also said that for months now , inspection points have been set up in areas bordering Jalisco's neighboring states , and flyers have been deployed to locations where cases could potentially be reported.

Work is also being done to train and raise awareness among livestock farmers about the serious problem posed by this parasite.

" Early warning is the best vaccine against this type of epidemic , it's the best vaccine," he said.

Eduardo Ron, head of Sader , reiterated that so far no positive cases have been detected in Jalisco .

The official also announced that the State Government sent medical support to combat the screwworm plague on the Southern border .
