Health , as a fundamental pillar of life, becomes a point of consideration for every family in the country. There are several ways to access it, which vary in cost and benefits . One of these ways is through Supplemental Health Plans.
These are backed by law and guarantee the right to health of Colombians who belong to these entities. They began to be implemented with Law 100 of 1993 and offered the possibility of providing services in addition to the Mandatory Health Plan.
How do these plans differ from prepaid medical plans?
Supplementary Health Plans and prepaid medicine are completely different options within the same voluntary health system plan. While Supplementary Plans expand the benefits of the Health Benefits Plan (HBP) , prepaid medicine offers exclusive and additional services that complement each other.

These plans are contracted with the same EPS as the user. They aim to improve access, timeliness, and the experience of care, but do not cover procedures outside the health benefits plan.

Due to this portfolio of additional services, which are not mandatory, costs tend to rise, as do the services provided and the opportunities available for access. The regulations for both are different.
While plans are regulated by the public system and depend on the user's affiliation with an EPS, prepaid medicine is offered by private, independent entities with greater operational autonomy regarding rates.
Which entities offer Complementary Health Plans?
This is the list of EPSs that are regulated by the National Health Superintendency to offer supplemental plans.
  • Compensar: This plan includes direct access to specialists, telephone and medical advice, home care, laboratory tests, in-home therapies, and a psychoprophylactic course for expectant mothers. It also includes three free consultations at Compensar locations. Costs vary depending on the benefits you want.
  • Sura: This EPS's complementary plans include home medical care, home dental emergency care, hospitalization privileges, management of your own hospital room, 24/7 personalized counseling, laboratory sampling, and recreational spaces.
  • Famisanar: This EPS includes access to exclusive network specialists, exclusive medical centers open only to members, home care, medical guidance and 24/7 availability of healthcare professionals, pregnancy support, beds for companions during hospitalization, and access to various medical disciplines.
  • New EPS: Includes most of the benefits of the previous plans, plus special coverage for newborns, a preferential network of specialists, additional coverage for minor and outpatient surgeries, and nighttime nursing assistants.
  • Total Health: This plan includes home care, a single room with special services, maternity and newborn care coverage, delivery and cesarean section care, coverage for various specialties, travel assistance, and coverage for injuries from high-risk sports.
  • Sanitas: Includes exclusive and preferential care, individual hospitalization, a special companion for children under 15, discounts on health programs and other products with partner brands, and additional coverage.
  • Western Health Service EPS (SOS EPS): Includes direct access to exclusive specialists, dental services, diagnostic assistance, treatment of complex illnesses, access to ambulances in case of emergency, hospital care, maternity coverage, pain-free natural medicine, and vaccinations.
