Cutting your toenails seems like a routine gesture, but we don't always do it correctly. Most people usually resort to classic nail clippers , unaware that this tool can cause more inconvenience than benefit. Podiatrists insist that foot health is key to our overall well-being and that choosing the right tool can prevent pain, infections, and even postural problems .
Our feet bear our weight every day, yet they're often forgotten in our personal care routine. While we spend time on our hair or facial skin, we forget that poorly trimmed nails can lead to ingrown toenails, inflammation, and discomfort that directly affect our quality of life. The choice of nail clippers, so common in many homes, is now in the spotlight of specialists.

Podiatrist Manuel Vidal , known on social media as @podomanu , has been blunt in his recommendation. In a widely shared video, he delivers a direct message about the use of nail clippers: "Throw them away, they're garbage." With this statement, he makes his position clear and opens the door to a series of practical tips for keeping your feet in good condition with the right tools.
Manuel Vidal's five tipsThe specialist explains that we only need four basic tools to properly care for our feet , without resorting to unnecessary or expensive products. In his words, the important thing is to focus on what really works and maintain a consistent routine. Here are his tips:
- “A good moisturizer for your heels . There are thousands of brands out there, and there's no such thing as a best cream. Try several and stick with the one that works for you. That's the only way the calluses on your feet will improve.”
- “You can use a pumice stone , but don't overdo it. Gently rub your heels after showering. If you use too much, you could cause even more dryness. Use it wisely.”
- “ Pliers are the best way to cut your nails . They allow you to cut straight or curved nails depending on the anatomy of your nails,” says Vidal, adding that “nail clippers are rubbish because you can't customize the cut.”
- “A cardboard or metal file is ideal for filing down any sharp edges left on your nails, and if you cut your nails straight across because they tend to stick in, you can use this to file down the corners.”
Vidal himself concludes his advice by reminding everyone that foot care shouldn't be taken lightly and that the most important thing is to maintain simple and consistent habits . With a straightforward message, he insists that there are no miracle cures: "I'll tell you what works, period." His advice is a reminder that, to maintain foot health, less is more.
