Have you received mail from your health insurance provider? The news that additional contributions are rising again? This could soon be the case for millions of people in Germany. This year, eight statutory health insurance funds have already informed their members that they will have to dig deeper into their pockets for their healthcare . Six more could follow this month. Statutory health insurance funds (GKV) are under enormous financial pressure. TheGKV umbrella association has now pointed this out again: A spending freeze is imminent.

The statutory contribution is frozen at 14.6 percent, but each of the 94 health insurance funds levies additional contributions based on its financial situation. Significant financial reserves are lacking. The trend in additional contributions has remained the same for years: the curve is pointing upwards. At the turn of the year, they were between 1.7 and 2.9 percent. Thus, revenues are rising, inevitably, because expenses are rising as well. The victims of this overall trend are approximately 74 million insured individuals.
